ABOUT US

Presentation

Bioseb is developing and distributing a whole range of experimental biology instruments and systems for pre-clinical research - mainly focusing on the "in vivo" field in neuroscience (behavior evaluation, analgesia measurement, anxiety studies, loco motor activities) and animal physiology (metabolism, cardiac functions, breathing, physiological monitoring).

We work closely with our customers - private and academic labs - around the world to identify the needs of researchers and develop innovative solutions that will help science progress. We believe that research should not be limited by the availability of adapted instruments, but that well-designed instruments can open new fields of research. With a strong focus on practical and ergonomic solutions, we want our instruments to simultaneously be accurate and easy to use, allowing the scientific teams to save time and concentrate on their main task: research and exploration of new fields in experimental biology.

We consider that our fundamental mission starts after a new instrument is designed and sold: by observing the use of our new instruments in latest research works, following citations in scientific publications and communicating in the numerous congresses we attend every year, we make sure that the new developments capitalize on the experience of our users, while helping to facilitate the next step in their research.

History

Founded in 1993, Bioseb (BIOScience and Experimental Biology) has been owned by Jacques Desevré since 1996. From 1996 to 1999, the company developed automated software targeting the safety pharmacology field for real time detection and analysis of the ECG/EKG/BP and other hemodynamic parameters in animals, from large species to rodents. Some of these systems are still in use today in pharmaceutical laboratories as well as in academic labs.

In 1998, Bioseb started to focus on instruments to measure the behavior of rats and mice. Starting with a distribution agreement with the well-established Spanish company LETICA/PANLAB, Bioseb soon developed its own instruments, among which the Grip Test, an easy way to objectively quantify the muscular strength of rodents (mouse and rat) and to assess the effect of drugs, toxins, muscular (i.e. myopathy) and neurodegenerative diseases on muscular degeneration ; and the Electronic Von Frey, a quick and easy solution to assess the threshold of sensitivity to mechanical stimulation in rodents.

In 2000, the Automated Tail Suspension Test (TST) was launched as a complete revamping project requested by its inventor Roger Porsolt. The TST is used to screen molecules in research works on depression, and is a fast and reliable way of testing psychotropic effects of drugs (anti-depressants and sedatives). Bioseb's Tail Suspension Test, with its original design, is the only multichannel fully automatic test of this kind in the world, and as such has been widely used and acclaimed in research labs all over the world.

From 2001 onwards, the business development of Bioseb increased progressively not only in the French market, but also in other European countries - the Sales activity being led by a growing sales force and the Research & Development activities focusing on new instruments to study pain, anxiety and motor-activity in rodents. The Rodent Pincher, a fast and accurate algometer based on an instrumented pincher as an alternative to the Randall-Selitto test, and the Dynamic Cold/Hot Plate Test, to measure sensitivity to pain resulting from exposure to heat or cold, thus opening new investigation fields for research on analgesia, are some examples of the innovative developments in Bioseb's growing products range.

In November 2008, Bioseb made its first move to the North American market by participating to the Congress of the Society for Neuroscience in Washington (DC). The decision was made to expand Bioseb's activities in that preeminent market for the pre-clinical field. The American company EB-Instruments based in Florida was appointed as the main distributor of BIOSEB products in North America, covering the United States and Canada. From its manufacturing base in the Tampa bay area in Florida, EBI distributes, installs and maintains a full range of in-vivo research instruments to serve preclinical research teams.

In June 2010, thanks to our customers and to the collaborations initiated with some leading research teams in North America, our new instruments, like the T2CT (Thermal Place Preference), the Thermal Gradient Test, an operator-independent analgesia/nociceptive research instrument to demonstrate temperature comfort threshold on rodents, and the DWB (Dynamical Weight Bearing apparatus), measuring the postural equilibrium on freely moving mice or rats, were introduced and quickly became more and more popular in the preclinical pain research field.

Since Jacques Desevré's sad demise in 2011, the Bioseb team has maintained the same spirit of curiosity, innovation and close collaboration with the field researchers to design and develop new and improved solutions. Ground-breaking instruments like the Automated Dynamic Weight Bearing, based on video imagery interpretation, taking advantage of the most advanced algorithms of morphologic analysis in dynamic conditions, or the CIS Software, a new system for increasing the repeatability of nociceptive tests, are covering needs identified by our research partners in the labs, and paving the way for new applications.

2012 will see innovation in weight bearing analysis in kinematic conditions, improvement of the depression test, as well as the marketing of a very novel solution to create cardiopatic models of rodents. Stay tuned...
