ActivWheels - An indispensable tool in the study of Anorexia Nervosa

A new publication released by the Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences, at Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy), features Bioseb ActivWheels (BIO-ACTIVW), which are used to study a model of Anorexia nervosa in Female Adolescent Rats.

The research team, in their own words, "investigated the involvement of the glutamatergic signaling in the Nucleus Accumbens in this experimental model. [They] here demonstrate that food restriction causes hyperactive and compulsive behavior in rodents, inducing an escalation of physical activity, which results in dramatic weight loss."

Compulsive physical Activity is characterized by an increase in running distance, as well as mean and max. speed on the wheels. Interestingly, the scientists team used a specific parameter of Bioseb's software, that allows them to discriminate physical activity into different sequences : long-exercise and brief-exercise sequences are measured here as an index of hyperactivity, based on a minimal run of 2m for each entrance in the wheel.
